Short Term Accommodation

In life, unforeseen circumstances can arise—be it a crisis, a sudden illness requiring hospitalization, or your primary caregiver needing a break. During such times, accessing safe and supportive accommodation becomes crucial. Home Caring offers temporary living solutions for individuals with disabilities, aimed at keeping them integrated within the community and preventing unnecessary hospital stays or early admission into aged care facilities. As part of the NDIS, these services are categorized as Short Term Accommodation (STA) and Medium Term Accommodation (MTA), providing essential support during transitional periods. Below is an overview of these accommodations and the services Home Caring offers.

What is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?

The NDIS defines Short Term Accommodation as temporary support spanning 2-6 weeks, funded through your plan’s Core budget. STA essentially replaces what was traditionally known as ‘respite care’, offering a modern approach to temporary caregiving solutions.

This service, now termed ‘Short Term Accommodation and Assistance’, continues to support participants and their caregivers by providing a safe and caring environment for temporary stays.

Who can access Short Term Accommodation (STA)?

STA is accessible to NDIS participants who find themselves in
situations such as:

  • Experiencing a significant change or crisis that leads to instability.

  • Needing support for capacity building and independent living.

  • Requiring respite for caregivers, whether due to hospitalization or absence.

  • Seeking a temporary change of scenery, like a holiday.

  • Awaiting home modifications or recovering from illness.

What is Medium Term Accommodation?

Medium Term Accommodation offers NDIS participants a transitional housing solution for up to 90 days, bridging the gap to a more permanent living situation. This funding aims to avoid unnecessary aged care placements or extended hospital stays by providing a temporary home during the transition period.

Who can access Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)?

Eligible NDIS participants can use MTA as a temporary solution while awaiting their permanent housing, particularly in cases like:

  • Transitioning from or to aged care facilities.
  • Waiting for home modifications or assistive technology installations.
  • Awaiting availability in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

What type of STA and MTA do you offer?

Home Caring ensures high-quality STA and MTA options with our modern, self-contained apartments. Designed with 2 to 3 bedrooms and accommodating no more than 2 participants each, our units are conveniently located near essential services and are fully equipped with necessary modifications and assistive technologies for a comfortable stay.

What support will I receive while staying in STA and MTA?

Offerings include home modifications, nutritious meals, 24/7 personal care, medical and nursing support, allied health services, counselling, specialist coordination, complex clinical care, behavioural support, assisted transport, and disability employment support.

What can I do while staying in STA and MTA?
